Once again Lake Clark National Park and Redoubt Mountain Lodge have donned their winter coats. Ursus Arctos (brown bears) are fast asleep in their dens while expectant mother bears enter their final month of gestation. Right now in the “Last Frontier” as the temperatures dip well below zero, snug in their dens insulated by feet of snow, the mother bears are giving birth. The winter solstice marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year; translated from its latin meaning “sun standing still”. The sun appears at its lowest point in the sky, and its noontime elevation appears to be the same for several days before and after this event. Following the winter solstice, the days begin to grow longer and the nights shorter giving cause to many cultures recognition of rebirth, hence, annual gatherings, festivals, rituals and holidays!
